DEPARTMENT OF ENDOCRINE SURGERY
The discipline of Endocrine surgery is an emerging field in medical science. Endocrine organs exert their distant target action through hormones and comprise of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal gland, breast, endocrine pancreas, pineal gland as well as pituitary, the master gland.
The unit of Endocrine Surgery at Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, Salem-1 is the second of its kind in the state of Tamilnadu. The outpatient service for Endocrine Surgery wasinaugurated by the Honourable Dr E. Palanisamy, former Chief Minister of State, in September 2016 on the third floor of PMSSY super specialty block, GMKMCH. Since the turn of the century, there has been an increasing incidence of endocrine diseases including breast cancer, thyroid cancer, thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, obesity, and so on. Hence, our objective is to provide tertiary health care for the management of endocrine-related diseases on par with world standards and to meet the growing demand of needy patients from the neighboring 6 -7 districts. In recent times, advanced endocrine procedure including endoscopic thyroidectomy was performed in our hospital which is first of its kind in the Salem district. Operation theatre was allotted to Endocrine Surgery in the month of April 2022 at specialty theatre complex in PMSSY block. Since its inception, many challenging cases of malignant pheochromocytoma, retrosternal goiter, parathyroid carcinoma, etc.,have been dealt withefficiently.
Many well-designed research projects and clinical trials are conducted. The ongoing ICMR extramural project on Thyroid cancer is registered in world portal of Clinical trials registry. The outcomes of the research have been presented at National and International conferences and published in many international peer-reviewed journals.
