Institution History
Govt Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College is a Tamil Nadu Government Medical College established in 1986. The college is in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India, and is named after the former Iron and Steel Minister of India Mr. Mohan Kumaramangalam. The college is recognized by the National Medical Council. It is a prestigious institution of Salem city, started on 23rd April 1986. The foundation was laid by the Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India on 25th October 1988.
The college is affiliated with The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medica University. The college has obtained permission in 1990, from MCI for 75 admissions of M.B.B.S., students per year. In 2013, MCI permitted increasing students’ strength from 75 to 100. Competency Based Medical Education curriculum was implemented and is being followed meticulously. We also have various Post-graduate courses, Paramedical courses like BSc (MLT), BSc OT AT, BSc Nursing, BSc Cardiac Technology, DMLT, etc. We have a Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MDRU) to strengthen the research activities.
It is a 1642 bedded hospital that serves approximately 935917 patients in OPD and 489889 patients in IPD annually. Hospital has well equipped Central laboratory, HLA lab, Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory, HIV viral load testing facility, WHO accredited Measles – Rubella testing laboratory, Blood bank, Dialysis unit, Radiology unit, Non-Communicable Diseases center and organ transplantation unit functioning with a dedicated Doctors and Staffs.
We have a separate Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana block (PMSSY) with all the super specialty departments functioning there. Being a tertiary care hospital it is a part of various Government schemes such as Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) Center, National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Tamil Nādu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) etc.
